Melrose, Massachusetts (1866-1868)
In late 1866 the Tremont Watch Co. moved from Boston., Mass. By Aaron L. Dennison and changed its name to Melrose Watch Co., and began producing the complete watch movements, movement engraved, “Melrose Watch Co.” and dials marked “Tremont Watch Co.” About 3,000 were produced. Serial No. range 30,000 and higher. In 1868, the Melrose Watch Co. runs short on capital and requests the stockholders to contribute more money. After he fails, Mr. Dennison returns to Boston, seeking to organize a new company to purchase the Melrose Watch Co. and Factory. On about 1870 sold to the English and used the name Anglo-American Watch Co.
This rare example is among the first 1000 produced in 1866 by the newly formed Melrose Watch Co. It is 18 size, hunting Model Key wind and key set, full plate gilt, 15 jewels (high Grade), marked "MELROSE WATCH CO./BOSTON", serial No. 31860. The white porcelain original dial is distraction free and marked: "TREMONT WATCH Co." It is cased in a massive 4oz. Coin Silver fancy Key Wind Hunting Case by Bauer.
