UNITED STATES WATCH Co. Marion Watch Co. Marion New Jersey 1865 – 1877

The United States Watch Company was chartered in 1865, and the factory building was started in August 1865 and was completed in 1866. The first watch, called “The Frederic Atherton” was not put on the market until March, 1867. It was Americas first mass produced stem wind watch. The first Grade was 18s, 19 Jewels, full plate and a gilt finish movement. A distinctive feature of the company’s full plate movements was the butterfly shaped patented opening in the plate which allowed escapement inspection That same year a second grade called the “Fayette Stratton” was introduced. It was also a gilt finish, full plate movement. The year 1875 hit the watch industry the hardest; price cutting was predatory and the higher priced watches of the United States Watch Company was particularly vulnerable. The Centennial Exposition in 1876 was not enough to save the faltering company and they finally closed their doors in 1877. Only 60,000 watches were produced during the 10 years of their existence. They were the most expensive American pocket watches of their day!

They were the first to gain independence from European watch providers in the New World. But more than that, they sought to provide a more accurate watch at a affordable price to the American Citizen. After beginning activity in Boston by the Boston Watch Co. 1853 – 1859, In January 1859, the Waltham Improvement Co. and the Appleton, Tracy & Co. merged to form the American Watch Company. In 1860, as Lincoln was elected president and the country was in Civil War, the American Watch Co. was faced with serious problems. The next year, business came to a standstill. There seemed to be little hope of finding a market for watches, and bankruptcy again seemed close at hand. At this point it was decided to cut expenditures to the lowest possible figure and keep the factory in operation.

American horology owes much to members of the Waltham Watch group such as Bacon, Church, Dennison, Fogg, Howard, Marsh, Webster, and Woerd, who contributed much to its development and success. In early 1861, the name “J. Watson” appeared on model 1857 (first run: nos. 23,601 to 24,300 total production 1200).

A size 10 women’s watch was made in July of 1861 with the first serial numbers of 44,201. It was marked “Appleton, Tracy & Co gold balance, ky wind and key set, ¾ plate, 13 to 15 jewels. Some were marked “P.S. Bartlett” and a 15 jewel was marked “Appleton, Tracy & Co.” A special model, 10 size, serial numbers of 45,801 to 46,200, is extremely rare. By 1957, 35,000,000 watches were produced, and the factories closed forever.

Non-reflective black dial marked: "OMEGA". The movement is a 3/4 plate gilt, pendent set "17 Jewels/SWISS", marked: "439 CHRO" under the balance, Single button in the center of the crown to activate the register. Marked: "OMEGA, serial No. 8,382,820 (which dates this movement to 1933). We also placed this watch to a 20mm fit with a Omega Steel vintage 1960s deployment bracelet (please view some this fit with the images provided). Clean running, and fully functional. Unique and very rare. This all-original solid gold watch was made especially for HOWARD & Co. 5th Ave., New York in 1879. This American Silversmith and Jeweler specialized in fine Silversmithing. This firm was established in 1866 by Edward T. and Joseph KP. Howard. Branches were opened in Newport and London. The last heard of from this Jeweler was 1922.

The case is all original to this movement and is in mint condition. The movement is 16 jewels, lever set, Adjusted with a serial No. 1,423,596. It is 3/4 plate nickel and is also fully marked: "Made Especially For HOWARD & Co., 5th Ave., N.Y." The dial is marked in a very rare overlapping initials: Waltham Watch Co. or AWC. 120 grams of 14k gold total weight. All jewel settings are 14k capped and screw down.
