Rare. **BOSTON WATCH Co. BOSTON, Mass. Original Double Hinged Display Case, marked on both bezels "DUEBER HAMPDEN". Mint white porcelain dial; signed just as the movement: "BOSTON WATCH Co.". 18 size, Hinting Model, full plate gilt, 15 jewels, lever set, Serial No. 159.713. Very clean, running, and in wonderful original condition.

"Boston Watch Company" Watches made by Hampden If you run across a watch marked "Boston Watch Company" on the movement and/or dial, it is VERY likely that it is NOT an original Boston Watch Company watch. The total watch production for Boston Watch Company was around 5000 watches, so if you have a Boston Watch Company watch with a serial number above 5000, then it's not an original Boston Watch Company watch, but nevertheless, very scarce.

The Dueber-Hampden Watch Company produced an 18-size model which was labeled "Boston Watch Company". It is not known how or when (or if) Hampden acquired the rights to the "Boston Watch Company" name, but these Hampden-produced "Boston Watch Company" watches are far more plentiful than original watches produced by the Boston Watch Company, which are quite rare and collectible. THIS IS A FINE COLLECTIBLE. DON'T INVEST IN THE STOCK MARKET, BITCOIN, BONDS. BUY HARD ASSETS, SOMETHING PROVEN IN TIME.

AMERICAN WATCH CO. 1859 – 1873 Boston, Mass. Commonly referred to as “The Mother of all American Watch Companies”, this manufacturer was a international pioneer in watch production and accuracy. They were the first to gain independence from European watch providers in the New World. But more than that, they sought to provide a more accurate watch at a affordable price to the American Citizen. After beginning activity in Boston by the Boston Watch Co. 1853 – 1859, In January 1859, the Waltham Improvement Co. and the Appleton, Tracy & Co. merged to form the American Watch Company. In 1860, as Lincoln was elected president and the country was in Civil War, the American Watch Co. was faced with serious problems. The next year, business came to a standstill. There seemed to be little hope of finding a market for watches, and bankruptcy again seemed close at hand. At this point it was decided to cut expenditures to the lowest possible figure and keep the factory in operation.

American horology owes much to members of the Waltham Watch group such as Bacon, Church, Dennison, Fogg, Howard, Marsh, Webster, and Woerd, who contributed much to its development and success. In early 1861, the name “J. Watson” appeared on model 1857 (first run: nos. 23,601 to 24,300 total production 1200).

The next model 1857 was the “R.E. Robbins” of which 2800 were made. The William Ellery marked: Em Ellery, (model 1857) was then introduced with the first serial number of 46,201. It was key wind and key set and has 7 to 15 jewels.

A size 10 women’s watch was made in July of 1861 with the first serial numbers of 44,201. It was marked “Appleton, Tracy & Co gold balance, ky wind and key set, ¾ plate, 13 to 15 jewels. Some were marked “P.S. Bartlett” and a 15 jewel was marked “Appleton, Tracy & Co.” A special model, 10 size, serial numbers of 45,801 to 46,200, is extremely rare. By 1957, 35,000,000 watches were produced, and the factories closed forever.

The example presented here is: AMERICAN W.Co. P.S. Bartlett 11j CIVIL WAR Silver original Circa:1865. The movement is original to this Coin Silver Key Wind Hunting Case. The movement is full plate gilt, 11j, solid steel balance, serial No. 176,129, marked: P.S. Bartlett/Waltham, Mass. Still running and very rare. Includes a original vintage sterling silver vest chain and wind Key. THIS IS A FINE COLLECTIBLE. DON'T INVEST IN THE STOCK MARKET or BONDS. BUY HARD ASSETS, SOMETHING PROVEN IN TIME.

INDEPENDENT WATCH CO. Fredonia, New York Circa: 1875-1881 The California Watch Company was idle for two years before it was purchased by brothers E. W. Howard and C.M. Howard. J.P. STEVENS & Co. J.P. STEVENS & BRO. J.P. STEVENS WATCH Co. Atlanta, Georgia 1882-1887 In mid-1881 J.P. Stevens bought part of the Springfield Watch co. of Massachusetts; and some unfinished watch components from E.F. Bowman. He set up his watchmaking firm above his jewelry store in Atlanta, Ga. And started to produce the Bowman unfinished watches which were 16 size and various 18 size watches, to which was added the “Stevens Patent Regulator.” This regulator is best described as a simple disc attached to the plate which has an eccentric groove cut for the arm of the regulator to move in. This regulator is a prominent feature of the J.P. Stevens plate with damascening. The pallets were equidistant locking and needed greater accuracy in manufacturing. About 50 of these watches were made. The pallet and fork are made of one-piece aluminum. The aluminum was combined with 1/10 copper and formed an exceedingly tough metal which will not rust or become magnetized. The lever of this watch is only one-third the weight of a steel lever. The aluminum lever affords the lease possible resistance for overcoming inertia in transmitting power from the escape wheel to the balance. In 1884, the company was turning out about ten watches a day at a price of $20 to $100 each. In the spring of 1887, the company failed. Only 169 true Stevens watches were made, but other watches carried the J.P. Stevens name.

This example is a J.P. Stevens AURORA NEW MODEL, 18 size, hunting model, Full Plate Nickel plates, lever set, marked: J.P. Stevens & Bro. ATLANTA, GA., serial No. 141,717, 15 jewels. The nickel plates are in excellent condition, free of distractions. The case is a very fancy yellow gold filled hunting case free of initials and closes tight. Very nice. This watch is running, but when placed upside down, it stops. Therefore, we are offering this rare watch on a "as is" basis.

NATIONAL WATCH Co. Elgin, Ill. 1864 – 1874

Waltham W.Co. directors Learning from the errors in production and design, formed the National Watch Co. and the goal was to provide a reasonably priced accurate and easily serviced watch (in the field) that would be available for use in the expansion to the Wild West.

The company was 1st formed in 1864 by officers of the earlier Waltham Watch Co. Some of these Waltham organizers were P.S. Bartlett, D.G. Currier, Otis Hoyt, Charles H. Mason and others. The idea of beginning a large watch company for the mid-West was discussed by J.C. Adams, Bartlett, and Blake. After a trip to Waltham, Adams went back to Chicago and approached Benjamin W. Raymond, a former mayor of Chicago, to put up the necessary capital to get the company started. Adams and Raymond succeeded in getting others to pledge their financial support. The National Watch Co. was formed in August 1864 and incorporated in Elgin, Illinois. The factory was completed in 1866, and the 1st movement was a B.W. Raymond, 18 size! All watches were key wind and had porcelain dials marked: “NATIONAL WATCH Co.” Any dial that is marked this way and is mint, is very scarce. They made history creating the foundations of mass production and the ease of service by watch journeyman in the field. They produced 400,000 watches by 1874, allowing circulation of watches available for use in the 1870s. In 1874 they went out of business, refinanced, and incorporated with a Name change to the city to which they owed their origin, Elgin NATIONAL WATCH Co., Elgin, Illinois. They went on to produce 50 million watches, both wrist & pocket by 1955.

Wild Bill Hitchcock, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Railroad men, gunfighters, Saloon keepers, Lawmen, Cowboys all carried National Watch Co. watches because they were available, accurate, reasonably priced and in circulation all over the Wild West at that time! This example is NATIONAL WATCH Co. Elgin, Ill. Chas Fargo 7j, Key Wind/Key Set, serial No. 148,965 and marked: ELGIN., full plate gilt. The full plate gilt plates are in excellent condition, if not mint. The original white porcelain dial is single sunk marked "NATIONAL WATCH CO." with a very fine chapter ring and is absolutely mint and free of any distractions. The case is a beautiful massive 4oz. coin silver Hunting Model case featuring a single blank SHIELD surrounded by flower designs. All surfaces are free of dents or any distraction that might distract. Just removed from my personal collection, clean running and a historic early American watch.
